Brainwave Entrainment – What Do I Need To Know?
The term brainwave entrainment causes many to have flashbacks to high school or college biology and makes them want to run screaming into the night. For others, the term may sound really cool and elicit a response of ‘Wow, that sounds interesting, tell me more’. So in this article, I’d like to address both sides of this, offering a little science for those that are intrigued and a ‘bottom-line’ version for those that have no interest in the science part.
The Science of Brainwave Entrainment
First, the science part. As you may know, the brain is made of billions of cells called neurons that, when sending signals all at once, produce ‘electrical’ activity called brainwaves. Now entrainment is a physics principle that is applied across many systems, such as astronomy, chemistry, electrical, etc. and can also be applied to the brain. It simply means the process where 2 cycles synchronize naturally with each other in order to work more
efficiently.
Electrical activity in the brain will change depending on what the person is doing. For example, the brainwaves of someone sleeping are tremendously different than those of someone who is exercising.
When the brain is provided a stimulus, it undergoes a Cortical Evoked Response, whereby it emits an electrical charge in response to the stimulus. When the brain is given a repeating stimulus, it responds by synchronizing, or entraining, its cycles to this external rhythm. This is called the Frequency Following Response and can be used to alter brainwave patterns.
A number of studies have utilized EEG machines (machines that monitor brainwave activity) to show that brainwave patterns are altered in the presence of external auditory sounds.
There have been many studies performed that show brainwave training can affect many areas of one’s life. Some of the uses have been:
1) Doctors using entrainment to help patients speed up recovery.
2) Psychologists using it to augment traditional therapy.
3) Athletes using it to train their mind to focus more and better excel in competition.
There are many others, including (as you may guess given the subject of this site) improving meditation. The 2 main methods for brainwave entrainment are through the use of Binaural Beats and Isochronic Tones. These will be discussed more in depth in a later post.
Benefits of Brainwave Entrainment
Now, for the bottom line folks, here it is. Basically what the term means (in the context of meditative use) is to adjust our internal brain rhythms so that they synchronize with the external cycle of a sound wave. Or put another
way, we play a sound beat into our ears which sends the waves to our brain. Our brain ‘listens’ and begins to follow the pace and rhythm of the external sound wave. This brainwave synchronization is what causes the various positive effects.
So we can utilize this principle to affect many areas of our lives. One way is to improve our meditation through the use of binaural beats or isochronic tones from a site like The Unexplainable Store. These downloads can help a variety of people. For beginners that have difficulty entering that meditative state, brainwave entrainment can make the process easier. For those that are more experienced in meditation, it can help deepen your experience. Click here to see my review of The Unexplainable Store.
Also brainwave entrainment can be used to affect many other parts of our lives such as love, success, confidence and even luck. Super Mind Evolution System uses entrainment to heighten these other areas of your life. You can click here to see my review of The Super Mind Evolution System.
